Music for Good Friday and Passiontide
The Service of Shadows is a service held on Good Friday in the Wellington Cathedral of St Paul. This recording captures the seven Kyries sung at this service as well as other music for Good Friday and Passiontide. The choir is directed by Michael Fulcher and accompanied by organist Max Kenworthy.
Music featured includes Kyries from the masses of New Zealand composers Andrew Baldwin and Katherine Dienes as well as those of Palestrina, Mathias, Fauré and Langlais, plus the beautiful Requiem of Maurice Duruflé. Other music includes the Howells Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in B minor, and music by Kenneth Leighton.
Award-winning young New Zealand composer Andrew Baldwin was Composer-in-Residence at the Cathedral. Presented on the disc are the first recordings of Andrew Baldwin’s settings of “O vos omnes” and his Responses of the office of Evensong.
